MAN på Feministisk vecka

I sitt konstnärskap utgår Irina Laaja från den egna kroppens komplexitet och betydelse. Hur definitioner av sexualitet, normalitet och obscenitet vävts in i vår fysik och i vårt undermedvetna. Med stort fokus på processen och de upplevelser som härrör från den egna kroppen arbetar Irina Laaja främst med textil, skulptur och teckning. Hon beskriver det som att ”det finns en strävan efter det underliga, nästan obehagliga. Bestående av både smärta och humor. Något lite osäkert och obekvämt men som inte ber om ursäkt för sig”.
Utifrån sina tidigare teckningar har Irina Laaja för Feministisk vecka producerat tre skulpturer – “Headstand”, “There between butterfly and seated forward bend” och “Bird of paradise”. Tillsammans utgör de verket “Positions”.
Jessika Björhn är en idébaserad feministisk konstnär som ifrågasätter och synliggör. Ofta arbetar hon platsspecifikt med texter i form av ordlekar eller cut-up poesi. Texterna tar sig uttryck genom observationer, installationer, fotografier, ljus, ljud och collage. Arbetet är intuitivt och i sitt konstnärskap inspireras hon bland annat av kvinnohistoria, ekologi, psykologi, politik, shamanism och andlighet.
På Feministisk vecka passar Jessika Björhn på att ge en blinkning till Stina Wollters Sara Danius-skulptur ”Evigt stolt i eget ljus”, genom att synliggöra strukturer i verket ”MAN/SARA WAS HERE”.

En direktkopiering av beskrivningarna av orden ‘man’, ‘människa’, ‘mänsklighet’ och ‘kvinna’. Ett synliggörande och ett ifrågasättande. Samt en inbjudan. Att börja använda det gyllene ordet ‘en’ instället för ‘man’. Som Robin Williams karaktär Mr. Keating säger i filmen ‘Döda poeters sällskap’:
“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world”.

In her art Irina Laaja explores the complexity and significance of the body. How definitions of sexuality, normality and obscenity are woven in to our physique and our subconscious. With a strong focus on the process and of the experiences that stems from her own body Irina Laaja mainly works with textiles, sculpture and drawing. Irina Laaja describes it as ”a strive towards something strange, almost unpleasant. Consisting of both pain and humor. Something insecure and uncomfortable, yet unapologetic”.
Based on some of her earlier drawings Irina Laaja has produced three sculptures to show on Feministisk vecka. “Headstand”, “There between butterfly and seated forward bend” and “Bird of paradise” are the three units that together form the artwork “Positions”.
Jessika Björhn is an idea based feminist artist who questions and reveals. She often works site-specific with texts in the shape of wordplay or cut-up poetry. The texts are expressed through observations, installations, photography, light, sound and collage. The work is intuitive and in her art she is inspired by women’s history, ecology, psychology, politics, shamanism and spirituality.
At Feministisk vecka, Jessika Björhn takes the opportunity to give a wink to Stina Wollter’s Sara Danius sculpture which title translates to ”Forever proud in it’s own light”, by acknowledging structures in the artwork ”MAN/SARA WAS HERE”.

‘Man’ or ‘Sara was here’ is a glimpse into SAOL – Swedish Academy’s Dictionary It’s a direct copy of the descriptions of the words ‘man’, ‘human’, ‘humanity’ and ‘woman’. It is a reveal and a questioning. And a proposal. To start using the golden word ‘one’ instead of ‘man’. As Robin William’s character Mr. Keating says in the movie ‘Dead Poets’ Society’:
“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world”.
