Welcome to Chamber 304!

The windows have been polished, the floor wiped down, and the firewood brought in – the chamber is now ready for summer coffee gatherings.

In the museum’s church chamber, time has stood still. Here, it’s always 1985. By then, the room had become a space for celebrations and special occasions, for rest, nostalgia – and of course, for surströmming.

A Resting Place for Travellers

Much earlier, the chamber served as an overnight stop for families who lived too far from the church to return home the same day. Church weekends were also an opportunity to run errands, visit the market, meet people from neighbouring villages – and enjoy a bit of fun.

Bustling Life in Bonnstan

Bonnstan was a lively meeting place. There were markets, taverns, brothels – and even a holding cell. That was necessary, as drinking and fights were common during church weekends.

But love was in the air too. Many met their future partner right here in Bonnstan. Night-time courting was quite usual – young men would spend the night with women they were interested in. They’d lie in the same bed, fully clothed, and if they got on well, it might eventually lead to marriage.

The Church Town Tradition

Church towns came about when church attendance became compulsory in Sweden. Bonnstan was originally built in the 17th century, but after several fires, most of the houses you see today date from the 1840s.

Chamber 304 is something of an exception – it’s decorated in classic 1980s style, just as it looked when the museum took it over.

A Living Heritage

Today, Bonnstan in Skellefteå is one of Sweden’s best-preserved church towns. Most chambers are privately owned – often passed down through families – and many are still used for gatherings, celebrations and other shared events.

Since 1982, Bonnstan has been listed as a historic monument and is protected under Swedish heritage law.
